Since I was old enough to remember, I was out in the fields every chance I could. Farming is in my blood, and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. With my grandfather, dad, uncle and cousin, I grow cotton and a little corn. We also operate Oak Grove Gin. No other weed hurts yield as much as pigweed, and it’s the biggest problem we have. The Enlist™weed control system is going to make a difference. We look forward to growing PhytoGen® cottonseed with the Enlist cotton trait.

The PhytoGen cotton with the Enlist trait yielded even better than expected. The 490 was in the middle of three other varieties. We were extremely dry going into harvest, and the 490 seemed to take the stress better. It outyielded two other varieties by about 100 pounds.

Enlist™ cotton looks great as harvest nears

The 490 looks really good and has finished out really well. We are about 3 weeks from spraying defoliant and then another 2 weeks from harvest. Weather has been just about perfect. We had one week of rainy weather that delayed us a little, but the moisture helped finish out the cotton.

I think the Enlist is going to be a big deal overall for cotton. It’s going to help around here control pigweeds. I’m excited about the Enlist system because it’s something new, and it looks like it’s going to be really good cotton on top of that.

Cotton is growing well in western Tennessee
Access to new technology is a big deal to us. I’m excited about the Enlist™ system because it’s something new. I would recommend Enlist to other growers.

We applied the glufosinate on Enlist cotton two weeks ago or so. When we sprayed the PhytoGen brand PHY 490 W3FE, it didn’t hardly bother it at all. We have a glufosinate tolerance now that we can actually apply when we need to and not worry about hurting yield.

Strong stand of PhytoGen
We’ve had pretty much a 100 percent stand with our PhytoGen® cottonseed with the Enlist trait. The ground warmed up perfectly. The cotton looks really good, and it is growing as well as anything we have.
We’ve seen a little bit of grass come through, but we haven’t had to make a glufosinate application yet. We haven’t had a ton of rainfall so that’s helped with weed control because the residual hasn’t moved around. We will scout weekly to determine the need for the glufosinate application. We likely will need to make one application. After regulatory approvals take place, we are looking forward to applying Enlist Duo® and knowing it will not harm the cotton at all.

We’ve planted about 2500 acres and will plant another 2500 acres in the next 7 days or so as long as weather holds out.

Wet field conditions
Rain has slowed us down a bit, but we are still on schedule and in pretty good shape. We have planted all the corn and are finished with burndown. During the next dry stretch, we will be planting cotton.

Pigweed will take yield away from you more than anything else. We have to learn how to manage it. We have to use residuals. We look forward to growing PhytoGen brand varieties with the Enlist cotton trait. Enlist is going to change everything.
